Brewton Elementary School’s Enrichment and the Arts Program consisted of a unique Enrichment model in addition to Art and Music for every student in grades K-4. Enrichment afforded an extra pull-out option for all students in grades 3 and 4 in place of a traditional gifted program often limited to test scores. The program rewarded those with the work ethic and aptitude for acceleration while honoring the diversity of the campus. Students experienced interest-based curriculum opportunities beyond the general education curriculum. Examples of the units included Chess, Multiple Intelligences, Coding, Robotics, and the Stock Market Game. These activities promoted critical-thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork. Visual Arts was one of the two bi-weekly art disciplines extended to the student body. Art was a fun means of active, hands-on expression that built fine motor skills through use of the senses, imagination, and self-discovery. Art prompted abstract thinking skills as students pondered and looked deeper into the aesthetics of their surroundings and began the creative journey to becoming life-long learners. In addition to visual arts, all K-4 students also attended two music classes weekly. Concepts in music theory were introduced and developed using age-appropriate activities, often incorporating other subjects such as language arts, mathematics, and the sciences. Enrichment and the Arts became a key component of Brewton Elementary’s motto, “Everybody Learns, Every Day”.
